It has already been over two weeks since the vax mandate initiated in the city of Boston. The initiation began earlier on January 15th. Many restaurants, bars, and other entertainment venues within the Boston area check for both IDs and vaccine passports.
So at this point, now is the time to ask… how has the vaccine passports been going so far in Boston? What kind of changes have been brought upon this city? And how have the restaurants been faring with this new ID process?
Well folks, it is just NOT looking good for Boston… at ALL.
A recent data chart from OpenTable revealed that reservations for restaurants were down 48% this year compared to January 2019. Other popular cities like Miami and Las Vegas saw an increase of reservations (Miami had over 14% and Las Vegas was 1%). Other cities that were also seeing a decline included San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Brooklyn, and even Cambridge.
Oh wait, and it gets even worse. Since the mandate began, restaurants in Boston have been losing $15,000 a week. $15,000… a WEEK. It doesn’t take a mathematician to know that $15,000 a week easily becomes $60,000 a month.
All of these percentages and decreases make for one horrid PR nightmare for Boston as well as other cities. While Miami and even Kansas City see more customers dining in restaurants, Boston continues to see more and more empty seats in their dining establishments. Interestingly enough, Miami doesn’t have any vax passport mandates. There is no entertainment happening simply because customers aren’t coming into the city for entertainment. That only results in 48% decrease and $15,000 a week going down the drain.
The city of Boston, as well as other cities seeing the decline, can bounce back. Only thing is it will take a bit longer for some, especially for those seeing over 50% decrease in reservations. It’s the kind of PR nightmare that will take quite a while to recover.
January and February are known to be the toughest months ever for restaurants in Boston (or in colder areas in general). These restaurant reservations and sales are only going to plunge further is something isn’t done soon.
The human migration shows that human beings are heading south to cities like Miami and Kansas City. Not Chicago, not New York City. Not even Boston.
