John Krasinski Ships Up to Boston

Los Angeles is where many aspiring stars flock to in order to get their big break and some of them come from Boston.  As I mentioned before in my post titled ‘Masshole Celebrities’ (which can be found here – Masshole Celebrities), many famous actors/actresses started their acting gigs in Beantown before making the big transition to LA.  Uzo Aduba attended Boston University to study classical voice before becoming Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Orange is the New Black.  Everyone gets their start somewhere before making it big in Tinseltown.

Even after making it as the next big actor/actress of our time, Boston celebrities still come back to their home city when they are taking a break from Hollywood.  For example, Denis Leary returns to Boston once in a while to catch a Red Sox or Bruins game every year.  Some celebrities even come back to Boston to promote a headlining event for their audience.  Last night I had the pleasure of seeing John Krasinski come to Boston for a special event.

Before I delve into the event itself, here’s a few tidbits about him.  John Krasinski grew up in Newton, Massachusetts with his older brothers Kevin and Paul.  He attended Brown University to study Theatre Arts where he was a member of a sketch-comedy group called Out of Bounds.  Once he graduated from Brown University as a playwright, John moved to NYC to pursue acting as a career.  After appearing in various commercials, John finally got his big break with the NBC sitcom series The Office in 2005 starring as Jim Halpert.  Since his success with The Office, John has starred in various films and even directed a few projects as well.  His latest was an American biographical war film titled 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

The event itself was an incredible opportunity to attend.  John Krasinski took time out of the office (from Hollywood, not The Office in Scranton!) to chat with other Boston natives.  He was moderated by brother Paul Krasinski at the Seaport’s Epicenter Stage in Boston.  Hundreds of fans gathered around the stage to hear John discuss his life in Boston, how he made his big break in Los Angeles, and his transition to the big screen with becoming a writer and director.

His latest film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi was the focal point of the event and he described how challenging it was to workout 12 hours a day to look the part for the role.  John also discussed his involvement with the #22PushUpChallenge, a social media challenge where you complete 22 push-ups to raise awareness for veterans’ mental health initiatives.  Other than discussing his work in Hollywood, John gave inspiring advice to his fans about following your passions and how important it is to work on something you love.  He remarked that we all have a role to make Boston a better city to live in, whatever our specialty is in this world.  John wrapped up the event by taking a few questions from his audience.  With that ended an amazing conversation with John Krasinski.

Overall I thought the event was absolutely amazing.  It is always great to see Boston native celebrities come back to their home state to reconnect with their audiences.  While the event was very entertaining, I also thought it was inspiring for me as well.  John moved to Los Angeles, like millions of other aspiring dreamers, to make a life for himself.  He talked about he was waiting tables in Los Angeles until he finally landed his break with NBC’s The Office.

It’s underdog stories like these that opened my eyes to how hard it is to make it in the entertainment industry.  The entertainment industry is one like no other, with millions of aspiring dreamers wishing to become the next big name in Hollywood.  It’s hard enough to even get your foot in the door, let alone land a role in a big blockbuster film!  John’s story to landing his role for The Office inspired me to work harder on this blog.

While this blog is only about 6 months old, MakeSandcastlesNotWar is only in its beginning stage of being something incredible.  In the future, I promise to work harder on fueling my passions towards this blog to create something meaningful in my life.  There are always shocking stories happening in La-La Land and it’s never a dull moment in the world of entertainment.  At the end, attending this event made me realize how passionate I am about the entertainment industry.

Emma Watson: Actress, Politician, Activist

Emma Watson is one of many proactive actresses speaking out about equal rights, feminism, and other humanitarian causes.  She graduated from Brown University in 2014 and later became a global ambassador for the United Nations.  Even with her busy political agenda, Watson is still making movies in Hollywood.  Her latest work, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, will be released in 2017.  In the meantime, she has been taking a break from acting since February to spend more time on her work for women’s rights.

Before she began her political agenda, everyone recognized her as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise.  Watson starred as Hermione Granger, Harry and Ron’s best friend and the brains of the group.  Her intelligence and quick wit has helped her and her friends get out of tough situations around Hogwarts.  Other than keep Ron and Harry out of trouble, Hermione helped Gryffindor win the house cup the first year she enrolled into the school.  Not surprisingly, Hermione is viewed as a feminist icon in the Harry Potter franchise.  Her intelligence and courage makes an unforgettable character in the series.

It has been years after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2, yet Watson continues to squander real-world problems with her intelligence.  She gave a powerful speech about gender equality in 2014 at the United Nations headquarters.  Just last week, Watson returned to UN headquarters to deliver a speech advocating for equality at universities and to address the controversial issue of sexual assaults on campuses.  Her speech was invigorating and moving, but not everyone was impressed by her latest event.

A column for The Sun that was published by Rod Liddle dismissed Watson’s words and practically mocked her abilities.  The insults start on the 2nd paragraph, beginning by saying, “she bored them all rigid with whining, leftie, PC crap”.  It went on to take a swipe at Angelina Jolie when asking why we take celebrities’ views too seriously.  After the paper was published, readers were outraged by the insulting piece.  Some users went to say that the comments were “disgusting” and even made a point that the piece was offensive to victims of sexual assault.

But what did Emma Watson have to say about the shocking piece?  She responded in the best way possible – sharing a video from her latest campaign for gender equality.  No insults, just a two-minute video showcasing the hurdles (both literal and metaphorical) that women have jumped through in history.  It’s kindness that will kill your enemies, not playing into their games.

That post was really insulting to Emma Watson!  She is a talented actress that aspires to millions of young women around the world.  Hermione was one of my favorite characters in the Harry Potter films because she was intelligent, witty, and courageous.  Harry Potter was the main star, but Hermione was the brains for the group.  Even though the last Harry Potter film was released in 2011, I feel as though Emma brings out her inner Hermione when she speaks at the UN ambassador headquarters.

At the end of all of this, Emma Watson is a talented and bright actress that is helping to pave the way for gender equality.  Her commercial success gained her millions of followers that believe in her cause.  Watson’s brand as a politician and actress both flourish through these events and continues to stand up for her cause.  We have to remember that actors and actresses are people too, standing up for the same humanitarian rights that we want in life.  It’s too bad that Hermione can’t cast a spell to speed up the process of gender equality for America.

Brad, Angelina, and Jen: An Internet Meme Love Triangle

September 19th marks one of the worst divorces in Hollywood History: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.  After being together for 12 years and only two years of marriage, the Brangelina couple finally called it quits this year.  It’s the divorce heard around the world, with everyone shocked and upset over the surprising news.  With this news comes a slew of questions we had to ask ourselves like, “how did things go so wrong? Is there such thing as a perfect marriage in Hollywood?  Does love even exist anymore?”.  In all honesty, what is life without Brangelina?!?

Yes, many people are rocked by the news and wondering how they will live without the Brangelina couple.  Once the new broke out on September 19th, the shit hit the fan on social media.  Audiences are reacting with the most relevant screencaps, including ones that involve Jennifer Aniston.  By the way, do you guys remember when Jen and Brad Pitt were a thing?

For those of you who were living under a rock during the early 2000s, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were one of the hottest couples of Hollywood.  Brad first met Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston in 1998 and decided to get married in 2000.  It was a rare Hollywood success for couple Brad and Jennifer, being married for 5 long years while being in show business.  Unfortunately, the couple broke it off in early 2005 and finalized their divorce in October.  Pitt started seeing Angelina Jolie while on the set for Mr. & Ms. Smith and the couple were seen together since.

Fast-forward 12 years later and the Brangelina dynasty is no more.  A flood of memes has been created by social media users, all expressing different outcomes of reacting to the news.  As I mentioned before, Jennifer Aniston became the focal point of the various memes created on the internet.  Some of them provide screencaps with Rachel Green from Friends.  The results are absolute GOLD.

In fact, along with the #Brangelina hashtag, Jennifer Aniston and #TeamJen also began trending worldwide.

Still, you can't expect the world NOT to be a little messy.

For more screencaps, check them out here at

Whatever your stance is on the marriage, you were one of millions of Americans that were shocked by the sudden news.  We at MakeSandcastlesNotWar are saddened by the breakup of Brangelina, but we know that there will always be new Hollywood couples in La-La Land.  Who knows what’s in store for Brad and Angelina Jolie in the future.  Will there be a sequel for Mr. & Ms. Smith?  Are Brad and Angelina going to remain friends after this divorce?  We can only hope that this divorce isn’t a messy one after this month.

Great things about Fall – 2016

Happy Fall everyone!  September 22nd of this year marks the first day of Fall equinox, the third season from September-December.  It’s a season full of pumpkin-flavored food, colored leaves, cold nights, and people dressed in Halloween costumes all around.  Lots of things ‘fall’ in Autumn – the leaves, daily temperature, and the amount of daylight we receive every day.  While Fall isn’t my personal favorite season (Summer will always be #1!), there are some fun things I enjoy about this season.  Here are a few of my favorite things going into Autumn:

Fall Season = Sweatshirt Season

With a fall season brings colder weather coming our way.  What better way to bundle up than with sweatshirts and sweatpants?  Nothing better than hoodies and sweatpants when going into school or work for the day.  I personally love getting those sweatshirts out of my closet for the season.  The sweatshirts go great with my white fingerless gloves/black knit beanie hat combo I put together.  It’s goodbye to shorts/tank-tops and hello to sweatshirts/sweatpants weather.

New TV Seasons

Fall is also the quintessential season for new TV shows or new seasons of recurring series.  The kids are back to school and the new episodes are waiting to be seen right when you get home from a long day of class/work.  It’s that time again to catch the new episode of Big Bang Theory or check out the newest series premiering on Fox.  For me, I am excited for the new episodes of American Horror Story: Roanoke this year!  American Horror Story always premieres its new season in October (it’s a HORROR series, duh!) and I always look forward to the newest chapter of the anthology series.  With the weather getting colder, it’s time to bundle up inside and check out the latest series on television.

Pumpkin-Spiced Craft Beers

One thing I have to point out is that I love my craft beers, especially those that create seasonal flavors in the mix.  I have to have my pumpkin-spiced ales after drinking my fruit-flavored beers during the summer.  Shipyard, Sam Adams, Ballast Point, and many other craft brewers mix various ingredients to create autumn-seasoned beers.  While I’m not the biggest fan of pumpkin pie, I will certainly drink a Shipyard Pumpkinhead when it’s out on draft at a bar.  Cheers to drinking pumpkin-spiced ales and IPAs these next few months!

This is Halloween

October marks the month of one of the most cherished holidays of the season: Halloween.  Halloween, a time to dress up as your favorite character and go trick-or-treating for candy around the neighborhood!  If you’re a young adult like me, it’s the time to go bar crawling as a power ranger or a Pokémon.  Bar crawls during Halloween are the only time you’ll see Mario, Freddie Krueger, and a Jigglypuff downing shots at the bar.  So don up your costume and take on the spooky streets on this creepy holiday.

Thankful for Thanksgiving

Gobble gobble!  Thanksgiving is that memorable time where you spend time with your family feeling thankful for things…and also the holiday where you eat a massive turkey with sides such as corn, mashed potatoes, peas, and other meals.  It’s that time to watch the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade special while you wait for that turkey to be ready for dinner.  After gobbling up that turkey, you start napping from the tryptophan entering into your brain (if people still believe that idea these days).  With that bird all gobbled up, just take a moment to remember all that you are thankful for during Thanksgiving.

68th Primetime Emmy Awards!

Last night was the premiere of the 68th primetime Emmy Awards – a celebration of the greatest TV shows to air this year.  All of the actors/actresses line up on the red carpet near the Microsoft Theater donning the most fashionable clothes made from designers such as Oscar de La Renta, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, and many other notable fashionistas.  After the red carpet special extravaganza, the battle is set to see which TV series takes home the most Emmys.  Who ended up winning the most Emmys for 2016?  What are the memorable events that everyone is talking about on social media?  Here are some highlights from the 2016 Emmy awards.

Sarah Paulson + Holland Taylor 4EVER

While Holland Taylor wasn’t joining her partner Sarah on the Red Carpet, the duo still make the most adorable couple.  Taylor was at home in Manhattan, live-tweeting her thoughts about Sarah Paulson being on the Red Carpet and all.  It wasn’t until she saw Sarah’s shiny green dress on TV where she absolutely LOST it on Twitter.  She was in such awe of how beautiful she looked and was even given a shout-out from her partner.  In the end, Sarah and Holland set new standards for relationship goals in life.  I guess what they say is true – absence makes the heart grow fonder!

Stranger Things Appear from the ‘Stranger Things’ Kids

At one point of hosting, Jimmy Kimmel talked with his mother onscreen about what she is making for dinner tonight.  Kimmel’s mother remarked that she was making PB & J sandwiches for attendees (about 7,000 in total!).  If that wasn’t cute enough, the sandwiches were hand-delivered in brown bags by none other than the kids from Stranger Things!  Millie Bobby Brown, who dressed up as Eleven from the Netflix series, rode on her bike down the carpet to hand out PB & J sandwiches to the attendees.  Millie was joined by her co-stars Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) for the stunt.  It was a moment too cute to miss during the Emmys!

Grease: Live Over Beyonce’s Lemonade?

The category was for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and it was between Grease: Live and Beyonce’s Lemonade.  And the winner of that award was… Grease: Live.  That’s right, Beyonce’s Lemonade special on HBO was upstaged by a live performance of Grease.  The Lemonade fanatics are beyond shocked that the special didn’t win the award, causing an uproar over her loss.  You can’t win em’ all, but you certainly can tweet your heart out about why Beyoncé should’ve deserved the award.  To all of the single ladies…tweet out your support towards Beyoncé!

Most Trophies Awarded – People vs. O.J. Simpson

The show that won the most awards this year was Ryan Murphy’s The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.  Murphy’s popular crime series won 9 awards, three of them went to the cast of the series.  Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance, and Sterling Brown all took home awards for their hard work onscreen.  Kudos to Sarah Paulson for her outstanding work as Marcia Clark for the series!  She was amazing as hypodermic Sally in American Horror Story: Hotel and she certainly deserves the award for portraying Marcia Clark.

Game of Thrones Breaks the Emmy Record

Brace yourselves… more awards will be taken home by Game of Thrones!  HBO’s Game of Thrones won even more awards today, but they achieved something even greater: breaking the record for highest number of Emmys won by any fictional series.  The popular fantasy drama series on HBO now stands at 38 awards won, beating the previous record set by Frasier with 37.  Slaying all of those dragons was worth it in the end because the reward was the 38th Emmy award won and making TV history after setting the record.
