Do not lose your knowledge that man’s proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind, and a step that travels unlimited roads.

Twenty-Six < Twenty-Seven

Today is a very special day for me.  It doesn’t have to do so much with MakeSandcastlesNotWar, but rather a personal event.  As of today, I will officially be 27 years old.

That’s right people – I am now TWENTY-SEVEN years old.  Twenty-seven years since being on this earth.  More importantly to point out is that I am in my 7th year of my 20s.

Twenty-six was definitely a great year for me.  I got a part-time job in the cannabis industry, made new meaningful connections in Boston, grew closer to my friends, and even learned a few tough lessons along the way.  It was quite a major improvement from last year and I continue to work even harder.

Almost two years after graduating from college and I still don’t have a lot of things figured out.  Things like my dream job or dream home are just a few of many things that are racing around my mind.  What I did learn is to be more accepting of the fact that I don’t have everything all set.  The puzzle pieces of my life haven’t fit together, but I feel as though I am on the exact same boat as everyone else.  I know that I am not the only 27-year-old struggling to keep it together.

One thing I started doing more was taking care of myself rather than worry too much about others.  During my hectic scheduling hustling around the city of Boston, I lost a few friends along the way.  It took me a while to realize that those people were never there for me in the first place.  Why worry so much about long time friends that stopped doing things for you when you can find better friends along the way?  Being attached to toxic friendships only left me more frustrated, upset, angry, and sad.

Rather than dwell on my falling outs, I spurred my emotions into my passion instead.  What I got was more connections and better friends that actually cared about me.  I learned some real tough lessons along the way, but I felt so much better about myself.  Focusing more on my goals and dreams motivated me more to seek out better people that would help me in life.

As I focused more into fixing my own problems, I started seeing that a lot of people really don’t have it together.  Those toxic people in my life only cared about themselves and they wanted people that would help fix their frivolous problems.  It seemed like they were doing better than me when really, they were doing worse than what I am doing now.  Coming to these realizations really pushed me towards reaching my hopes and dreams.

It was quite an amazing year being twenty-six and I will reminisce on all of the memories (both good and bad).  I look forward to the next chapter of my life that is full of new friends, new adventures, and even new experiences.  Twenty-seven is still a mystery to me, but I am eager to see what life has in store for me next.

With that, I bid farewell to twenty-six and am ready to say hello to twenty-seven.  Here’s to STILL being in my mid-20s!

ACS- Assassination of Versace Ending

After a hectic and fun day at the New England Cannabis Convention, I finally had the day off to catch up on some of my favorite series.  The season finale of American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace was finally on-demand.  I had some mixed feelings entering the season finale.  On the one hand, I was excited and ready for the final chapter of this action-packed story; on the other hand, I felt sad that this magnificent tale would be coming to an end.  It was quite a history to learn about from the fashion world.

As much as it pains me to say, its time to discuss what happened in the final episode.  Here’s the story:

Andrew Cunanan acted fast after murdering Gianni Versace.  He left on foot over towards the Miami Beach houseboat to hide.  After only a mere few days, Cunanan struggled to keep it together.  Basic needs like food became hard to come by, being that he was on the run and trying to avoid everyone he possibly could.  Cunanan saw his name on every news network, but what he also saw became even more disturbing.

Friends, even family members, were speaking for or against him.  Even his own father, Modesto, turned his back on him during one of the interviews.  At this point, Andrew Cunanan lost everyone who ever knew or loved him.  He was being hunted down by the police force and now his closest people were turning against him.  Cunanan was truly alone.

On July 23rd, the police finally closed in on the address of the houseboat he was staying at.  Once he holed himself up in his bedroom, Cunanan took his own life with a semi-automatic pistol (the same one he used to kill Madson, Reese, and Versace!).  The madness was finally over, yet the police never knew why he completed his string of murders.  It’s been over 20 years since Versace’s assassination and there are still no answers for Cunanan’s motives.

And with that, the crazy tale of serial killer Andrew Cunanan came to an end.  The episode’s title was ‘Alone’, which proved to be a common theme for the finale.  Andrew Cunanan was truly alone in the world, especially after murdering Versace.  All of his fairy tales and back-handed techniques came crashing down.

While the main focus was about the events leading up to Gianni Versace’s assassination, we also looked into the life of Andrew Cunanan.  Cunanan was an intelligent young gay man who charmed his way into the rich and famous.  He wooed many wealthy older men, eventually becoming Norman’s sugar baby.  After his father left the family to avoid arrest for embezzlement, Cunanan worked his charm to live a luxurious life with wealthy older men.

Cunanan refused to work for the money because he relied on his sophisticated charisma and intelligence to get what he wanted.  Even while successfully connecting with Norman, he created these wild fantasies that eventually caught up with him.  Friends like Jeffrey Trail and David Madson eventually saw through his tall tales about how he had a beautiful condo in San Francisco.  They refused Cunanan’s lavish gifts he offered, even fleeing from him when they had the chance.

There was a lot going on in the lives of both Andrew Cunanan and Gianni Versace.  It was surprising to learn about how these colorful figures came together during the mid-90s.  As tragic as this tale was, this was an amazing piece of history to dive into.  Who knows what the next crime story Ryan Murphy will feature next.

Act Like a Businessman, Think Like a Hippie

20180325_151630[1]

As you can tell from yesterday’s post, The New England Cannabis Convention was quite an amazing event.  There was so much to look at around the room.  This event featured lots of vendors, cannabis samples, and even some good food to snack on.  But besides those intriguing business plans, there were also a ton of people to connect with.  One common theme I noticed were the hippies running their own business as well.

Hippies were a member of the counter-culture that originally began as a youth movement during the mid-1960s.  They rejected the typical conventional values and took many hallucinogenic substances like LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) or psilocybin mushrooms.  As high as they were from the reefer, hippies influenced thousands of members within their subculture.

They say that yesterday’s hippies are today’s ad execs and that statement certainly rung true during the convention.  Hippies from all across the nation gathered together in the name of the cannabis plant.  Whether they were artists or growers, everyone made some significant contribution to the cannabis community.  Decades later and the hippies are still reigning strong in the fight for cannabis legalization.

It seems as though the hippies weren’t just ON something, but rather ONTO something.  Their weed smoking and communal sharing led a major revolution that would instigate a timeless legacy for years to come.  Unmarried couples felt free to travel and live together without societal disapproval; people became franker in expressing their sexual matters/preferences without feeling shameful of who they are (remember that LGBT activist Dennis Peron started the very first medicinal cannabis dispensary in San Francisco!).  Creative community living arrangements are becoming more accepted than before.

But the major takeaway is that this revolutionary subculture introduced new ways of doing business.  Ironically enough, all of that activism against corporate culture only introduced more unique strategies for the business world.  Instead of fighting off against these so-called ‘dirty hippies’, we could learn a thing or two from our earth-friendly folks.

These hippies could definitely teach us a thing or two about making things happen in the business world.  They know how to recruit a lot of members, they have such burning passion for what they are fighting for, and they shaped a legacy that would make widespread changes for years to come.  If the hippies can bring something like homosexuality to a better light, than they have the potential to change the world in ways we couldn’t even imagine.

So I guess what I am trying to get at is this – if you want to become a successful business professional, start thinking like a hippie.  Hippies have all of the tools necessary to be successful in the world, so we should start thinking like them if we want to push our business even further.  In the midst of the cloudy haze of cannabis smoke lies a group of incredibly talented people that have a lot to offer in this ever-changing landscape.

I’ll say it again — the hippies weren’t just ON something, but rather ONTO something.  All of that activism and pot brownies only lead to advanced business practices that helped shape many thriving companies we have today.  We have a lot to reasons to be grateful for our tree-hugging friends.

If you are amazed by the amount of sheer liberal change that has happened in America over the past few decades, you can thank the hippies for making it happen.
