Viceland’s Weed Week on April 17th-20th!

Alrighty then…today marks our LAST day of March (holy shitballs that was fast!).  Even though its currently snowing a bit here in Massachusetts, Spring is already here with its rainy days.  We’re transitioning from the snowy, cold days to days full of rain.  With those April showers on the way comes May flowers.

Speaking of flowers, what’s that special day in April where we celebrate my most favorite flower of all time? 4/20, of course!  Earth Day is commemorative to our earth, but April 20th is where the REAL party happens.  April 20th is less than a month away and brands like Viceland are already rolling out plans for the celebration.

TV network Viceland announced their special ‘Weed Week’ event happening on April 17th-April 20th.  4/20-friendly series will be airing throughout the ‘Weed Week’ event.  Series like Fuck, That’s Delicious and Dead Set on Life will some of many 4/20-friendly shows to check out.  But the best part about ‘Weed Week’?  BRAND-NEW episodes from two of my favorite Viceland series will be airing on April 19th!

My favorite TV shows, Bong Appétit and Weediquette, will kick off their new seasons just a day before April 20th.  It is SO exciting to hear that my favorite series on Viceland will return with new seasons during the event.  I knew that both series would be renewed for a new season, but I didn’t think that it would hit so soon.  Here’s a brief summary of the two shows and what we’ll expect to see in the next season:

Weediquette –  Weediquette is a documentary series hosted by Krishna Andavolu.  Andavolu takes viewers into the economics, culture, and science of the cannabis industry.  From kids using CBD medicine to NFL players combatting CTE with cannabis, each topic takes us into our complicated relationship with cannabis here in the United States.  As we delve further into the cannabis culture, it seems more clear that cannabis is becoming widely accepted into our social norms.

Next season will deal with topics surrounding immigration, driving while stoned, law enforcement, entrepreneurship, and other ideas.  While recreational cannabis has been made legal in more states (CA, MA, NV, and ME), the fight for cannabis legalization is still happening around the country.  Season 3 of Weediquette showcase more further complications that are hindering the legalization process.

Bong Appétit –  For the lighter and more culinary side of cannabis, Bong Appétit will be returning as well.  The show where the fabulicious Laganja Estranja smoked that dank weed is coming back on April 19th (more on that post here).  Bong Appétit stars Abdullah Saeed, Vanessa Lavorato, and Ry Prichard as they showcase cannabis-infused entrées.  From sausages to ice cream, different kinds of food from various cultures use weed as one of the main ingredients.

Not only has the menu changed, but the weed pantry itself has upgraded as well!  No official word on what types of food will be seen next season, but it surely will be mind-blowing to see what they create next.  Who knows what unique terpene flavors will be showcased in the new season (maybe the Ghost Train Haze will be making a comeback!).  You’ll want to get your munchies snacks ready cause Bong Appétit will be opening its doors in just a few weeks!

I’m SO excited for the new seasons of Weediquette and Bong Appétit in April!  These are the only few shows I look forward to on cable television these days.  To see that they’re both airing just a day before 4/20 makes the event even better.

This is a great publicity stunt by Viceland.  Viceland provides shows that take viewers into a look at controversial social cultures that audiences rarely know about.  When it comes to the cannabis culture, Viceland doesn’t get taboo about one of America’s most favorite plant.  It’s widespread approval grows even further with the 4/20-friendly programs.

Here’s to Viceland for hosting this special 4/20 event on April!  Be sure to check out ‘Weed Week’ on Monday April 17th.

Welcome Back to the Cash Cab!

Back when I was in high school I discovered this awesome series called Cash CabCash Cab was a game show hosted by stand-up comedian Ben Bailey that aired on the Discovery Channel.  Bailey would drive around New York City looking to pick up random strangers.  Once the contestants entered the cab, Ben would inform the party that they were part of the game if they choose to play.  Players would be asked to answer questions where they would win $25-$100 for each correct answer.  The game ends once the players reached their destination or if they answered wrong three times during the ride.

Cash Cab first aired on December 5th, 2005 and ended its final ride on April 18th, 2012.  It was a unique game show that took place within a NYC cab with a variety of trivia questions.  The cash cabs may have been out of service since 2012, but Discovery Channel is looking to revive the show soon.

After a 5-year cancellation, Cash Cab returning to Discovery Channel!  The adventurous game show is returning to the Big Apple for all new episodes.  Each episode will follow the same format with each contestant.  Discovery Channel has not announced a set host yet, but Ben Bailey could return his position as the Cash Cab host.  For an even more shocking twist, special comedians and celebrities will be driving the cab to pick up passengers.  There are no other changes that will be made to the classic format, but more news is to come soon.

It’s so awesome to hear that Cash Cab is returning soon!  I loved watching the series and I dreamed about entering the Cash Cab when I’m in New York again.  This will be interesting to see a modernized version of the series after being cancelled for over 5 years.  With ride-sharing apps being the new norm for transportation, it’ll be interesting if people will be taking the cab at all.

Who knows, maybe the Cash Cab will become a ride-sharing vehicle like Uber or Lyft.  The Discovery Channel should consider using a ride-sharing car rather than the typical cab since millennials get a Lyft these days.  Times have changed over the past 5 years and Cash Cab should consider ditching the cab to keep up with the latest trends.  That’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with the show’s format, but it would be a helpful strategy for better ratings.

For now, let’s appreciate that the Cash Cab will be rolling around the streets in NYC soon.  Who knows what unsuspecting passengers will win big money while on the Cash Cab!

Goodbye 25, Hello 26!

There was only one thing on my mind today: it was my birthday.  As of today, I officially turn 26 years old.  Wow…I’ve been living on this crazy planet for 26 years now!  Time just flies by when you’re working so hard.

I can’t believe that another year has flown by.  It seemed like yesterday that I was creeping into my mid-20s era.  Now’s the time to say goodbye to the fun times at 25 and say ‘hello!’ to the new adventures upon the horizon at 26.  25 was one of my better years and I can see things get even better as time goes on.

At 25 years old, I hit some milestones that thrust me into the throes that is known as the ‘Real World’.  Graduation, new job offers, and new friends are just a few of many highlights when I was 25.  It was fun, but things got real once college was over.  Today’s post for MakeSandcastlesNotWar celebrates a few highlights that happened at 25.

MakeSandcastlesNotWar

Even though I started this blog a few weeks before turning 25, it wasn’t until a few months down the road when MakeSandcastlesNotWar took off.  Since my first blogpost about The Witness, MakeSandcastlesNotWar has been an entertaining project for me.  From TV criss-crosses to Weedmaps billboard signs, writing this blog has been quite an adventure.  Other than writing for my fellow followers (shout out to you awesome followers/readers out there!), MakeSandcastlesNotWar has become personal project showcasing my passion of all things entertainment.  Turning 26 means more exciting adventures, more mind-blowing TV criss-crosses, and even more provocative news about the cannabis industry.  Strap yourselves in, folks – the ride is only getting started!

SSU Graduation

What better way to kick off this major year than with something that was so life-changing: college graduation.  A few months after turning 25, I officially graduated at Salem State University.  After completing my schoolwork for 3 & ½ years, I finally graduated from Salem State University for my Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.  With my diploma at hand, I was ready to take on the world.  Little did I know that the ‘Real World’ that was awaiting me would become much more complicated than I ever imagined.  Like many other college graduates, I became a struggling young adult looking to get my voice heard in a major company.  Even still, this cynicism wasn’t going to prevent me from achieving what I want.

Discovering CBD

Earlier I heard about the chemical CBD (cannabidiol) and was curious to try it sometimes.  A few weeks after graduation, I finally got ahold of some CBD vape pens to try out.  After taking a few puffs one night, I felt an incredible rush of happiness and relief.  This was my first night using CBD and I already fell in love with this unique product.  I felt the euphoria and calmness through the pens (without the psychoactive effects that come with THC-infused products).  It has been almost a year since using CBD and now I vape CBD oil for any occasion.  Not only do I enjoy vaping CBD, but I love promoting the product through word-of-mouth or with my blog!

Ticket Booth Worker at Berry Pond

A month into graduation, I landed a summer job at Harold Parker State Forest.  One of my favorite tasks was working at the ticket booth when the park opened.  My job was simple – stay around the booth and collect funding from customers that wanted a pass into the park.  It was so simple and fun at the same time because I had a lot of free time to catch up on some reading.  I’ve some really good titles while waiting around for customers to swing by.  Titles like On the Road and In Cold Blood were some good novels to read.  This was a nice change of pace to be outdoors at a park for my summer job.

Self-Confidence

After settling into what would be my new home, I gained a lot more self-confidence in myself when it comes to interacting with people.  When I moved into the city last year, I was anxious as hell to start talking to new people around Boston.  I lived in Ipswich for 18 years and this sudden shift into the city really threw off my social game.  It wasn’t until after summer that I gained more confidence in having small talk with strangers I haven’t met before.  Nowadays the trick comes almost natural to me when I interact with people.  Just last week I met a new friend in Boston after some small talk about my new haircut I got earlier.  A few minutes into talking with him and we already made plans to grab drinks after work (which we did on Monday!).

So that’s where my life is at this point – being a young enthusiastic college graduate who is ready to start a new life around Boston and make some new friends along the way.  Life after graduation hasn’t been easy, but I definitely got better at putting myself out there in Boston.  There are a lot of interesting people out there and I’ve become more excited (and less anxious!) about meeting these awesome individuals.

With that, it’s time to say goodbye to 25 and give a warm welcome to 26.  Who knows what zany adventures life will bring me in the future.  Being 25 was fun, but I am definitely looking forward to what life brings as I become a year older.  Here’s to being 26 years old!

The United Airlines Sexist Dress Code Club

Ever since I was a kid, I have been on many airplanes for vacation trips.  I took flights to PRSSA conferences, to California (one of my personal favorite trips!), to Miami for the cruise the next day, and even to Georgia to visit my extended family.  It was always exciting to pack my favorite games to bring with me on the plane.  Now that I’m older and security has tightened up even more around the airlines (thanks to 9/11), getting through the airport is pure HELL.

We used to be hopeful adventurers who were enthusiastic about flying, but now we’ve succumbed to becoming lab rats being pulled into institutionalized buildings where employees scream directions to us every minute. “Take your shoes OFF and put ALL electronic devices into the tray NOW!”, says the disgruntled worker to all passengers.  All this screaming and yelling over basic instructions has decreased our enthusiasm about flying.  If that isn’t enough to cause you to go insane, then you’ll lose it even more when you find out that some airlines won’t let you on board because of the way you are dressed.  This particular scenario happened recently with United Airlines.

Here’s the PR nightmare for today: two girls were boarding a flight in Denver to head back to Minneapolis on Sunday morning.  Since the girls were wearing leggings, United Airlines barred the girls from boarding the flight.  To make matters even more embarrassing, they were forced to change into a dress when the gate agent thought that the leggings were inappropriate.  United Airlines doubled down on their decision through a series of tweets.  This news was first posted by Twitter user Shannon Watts, a passenger who witnessed the scene while boarding a flight to Mexico.

Let me get this straight…two young girls, that weren’t even teenagers yet, were barred and forced to put on a dress because of their style choice.  Not because they wore something that promoted sex/drugs/violence, but simply because they wanted to wear leggings.  Seriously guys…LEGGINGS are what barred the two tween girls from flying United Airlines.  To make matters even worse, they were forced to put on a dress in front of EVERYONE at the gate. This PR nightmare is on another level of stupidity that its hurting my brain.

This sexist story hit the social media bug, causing a wildfire of shocked reactions from users everywhere.  More users were offended by the PR nightmare rather than the girls that decided to wear leggings on board.  Airline companies like Delta took to Twitter to troll United Airlines with their preposterous rule.  Even after the shocking reactions from users appalled by the nightmare, United Airlines STILL stood by with their decision.

Jesus Christ…just when I thought airports couldn’t get even more frustrating.  What is this country coming to?  Since when did we start allowing gate attendants to judge what’s proper clothing for women to wear onboard the airplane?  Not too long ago, people secretly had sex on a plane before landing (which was called ‘joining the Mile-High Club’).  Now we’ve gotten to the point of paranoia that we can’t allow tween girls to wear leggings on board the plane.  This PR nightmare really set a bad tone for United Airlines and their culture.

As a man, I think it’s absolutely preposterous that United Airlines barred the girls just because they wanted to wear leggings.  I could give a shit what women are wearing (whether it’s a big dress or tiny skirt) because I respect women for who they are.  Women should be allowed for choosing what to wear and not feel judged based on some bullshit sexist issues.  If you’re a woman and want to wear leggings on a plane, go ahead and do that (I’ll give you brownie points if they have a pot leaves on them!).  Leggings are an appropriate style choice, not some slutty accessory that would be deemed unacceptable in American culture.

Next time I’m planning a trip, I’ll be sure to wear some leggings before heading to my destination (probably something with pot leaves or horrific monsters as a design!).  There ARE such things as leggings for men and I’ve been thinking about purchasing a pair.  I’ll have to search for some good ones before I’m flying out for vacation.

With that, I call on all women to wear whatever clothes that they enjoy.  You do YOU, girl!  No man/woman can tell you that your fashion sense isn’t deemed ‘appropriate’ to wear!

Deadpool Teases a Sequel!

On a gloomy Friday evening, there was no better idea than to go check out a movie.  I’ve been dying to see Logan when it came out and some friends have told me that it was amazing.  After eating an early dinner at a sub shop, it was time to head to the theaters to go see Logan.  Even though the film opened a few weeks ago, the theater packed up just mere minutes before the film started.

Logan ended up being an amazing film!  The movie centers around James ‘Logan’ Howlett (Wolverine) and Professor Charles Xavier as they escort 11-year-old Laura to a destination in North Dakota called ‘Eden’.  Along the road, the trio encounter slew of enemies that are looking to kidnap Laura.  It was one adventurous road trip to North Dakota where we got to learn about Laura’s past.

While the film itself was excellent, there was something even more interesting that happened before it started.  After the trailers were finished, there was a new teaser being shown.  It took me a few minutes to realize that it was the teaser for Deadpool 2.  How ironic that they saved the best teaser for last right before Logan was about to be screened!  Ryan Reynolds will be returning as Deadpool once again.

The teaser itself was hilarious.  Wade Wilson is walking down an alleyway when he noticed someone getting robbed at gunpoint.  He dashes into the phonebooth to change into Deadpool.  It took him a minute or two as he struggled to get his gear on.  After fumbling with his costume, Deadpool notices that the guy was already dead before he got there.  In typical Deadpool fashion, he just laid his head onto his chest while sipping coffee.  The screen pans out from the scene to reveal that Deadpool will be coming back.

Other than being a hilarious trailer, it was an interesting publicity stunt that Marvel pulled off.  Marvel’s films are connected in some form or another and it holds true through their teasers (FYI, a poster of Logan can be seen on the brick wall!).  Deadpool and Logan are both titles from the same Marvel universe, so it made sense that Deadpool appeared before the film started.  There will be a lot more Marvel film releasing in the future, so this was great to captivate the audience about their newest title.

Seeing that teaser before Logan was amazing!  I’ve yet to see Deadpool and I’m excited to see that Ryan Reynolds will be reprising his role for the sequel.  Viewing trailers are my favorite part of going to the movies and the Deadpool 2 trailer worked well before the film.  Hopefully we will get more information soon on the Deadpool sequel.
