Golden Globe 2017 Highlights

Greetings, fellow readers!  Hope everyone had a good weekend (also hope that my New England region readers were keeping warm!).  Was going to post some good content, but I caught a random stomach bug that eradicated most of my motivation over the past few days.  Feeling MUCH better now and ready to kick off the week with a bang!

The Patriots weren’t playing on Sunday (it was their bye week), but the next best thing aired that night: The Golden Globe Awards.  Today is all about discussing the highlights from the Golden Globes.  From the glitz/glamour of the Red Carpet to celebrities cracking the best political jokes, it was quite an eventful night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  Here were some memorable moments from this year’s Golden Globes:

Red Carpet

It was a beautiful sunny day in Beverly Hills as the celebrities exited their limos and out onto the Red Carpet.  All the hottest actors/actresses arrived looking absolutely stunning.

Sylvester Stallone, one of the presenters of the show, arrived with his family.  40 years after the release of Rocky and Stallone looks just as badass as ever.  What was even more impressive was his wife and daughters all dressed in black.  If there’s any squad to join, it HAS to be with the Stallones.  Can we get a ‘Stallone Squad’ shoutout right here?   #StalloneSquad.

Besides Stallone’s badass squad, Vince Vaughn rolled in looking dapper as well.  The funny comedian got serious about Mel Gibson’s nominated film Hacksaw Ridge where Vaughn plays Sergeant Howell.  Hacksaw Ridge was released on November 4th, 2016 and raked in $137,300,000 in the box office so far.

Casey Affleck dropped by the Red Carpet to discuss his newest film Manchester by the Sea.  What was more interesting than his movie was the beard/manbun combo he was sporting.  I hope that he sports that look during his new film!

Steve Carrell & Kristin Wiig Animated Film Gag

Kristin Wiig & Steve Carrell presented the award for Best Animated Feature in the most humorous way possible: creating a dark story from animated films.  Carrell told the story of how his parents got divorced when he was six years old on “Fantasia” day.  Wiig got even more depressing with her experience of putting her 3 dogs down the same day she saw Bambi in theatres.  Note that none of these were true stories, but they made for a hysterical presentation.  Kudos to Steve and Kristin for presenting the category through black humor!

Andrew Garfield & Ryan Reynolds = Randyan ❤

Ok…I don’t know HOW I missed this, but there was some pure GOLD that happened on the Golden Globes.  So here’s what happened: Ryan Gosling won for Best Performance by Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy for his lead role in La La Land.  Gosling was shocked as he accepted his award, but what was happening in the background was even MORE shocking.  While Ryan was heading up to the stage, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield were seen in the background…making out.  SERIOUSLY…Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield making out during the Golden Globe Awards.  YOU GUYS…I CAN’T!

I’ve heard that California was the land of fruits & nuts…but DAMN!  We have a new couple to watch for and it’s Randyan!

La La Land was a common film within the show that won all 7 awards that they were nominated for.  Moonlight grabbed 1 Globe, but it was a major win for the motion picture.  Ryan Murphy’s The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept through the TV categories by taking home 5 awards.  American Horror Story: Roanoke didn’t receive any nominations, but Murphy’s other series certainly took over the TV categories.

Cecil b. Demille Award – Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep won the Cecil b. Demille Award for this year’s Golden Globe.  She accepted the award in her black dress with sparkly, colorful flowers hanging around her neck (she looked ABSOLUTELY stunning!).  After accepting her award, she used her speech to take a few jabs over the presidential election that happened in November 2016.  You better watch out, folks!  Streep isn’t messing around these days, even after receiving her Cecil B. Demille Award!

“My First Job”

This was an interesting segment where some celebrities discussed their very first job.  Some of them seemed common while others were just flat-out strange.  American Horror Story alumni Sarah Paulson mentioned that her first job before acting was a waitress for a restaurant.  You see folks?  Celebrities were JUST like us before they got famous!  They’ve struggled through terrible jobs before landing their big role in Hollywood.

So another Golden Globe Awards has come and gone.  There was glitz, there was glamour, there was even some celebs making out in some shots.  All in all, it was another crazy award show in Hollywood.  Now’s the time to start heading to the theaters to check out these films.

HOLLYWeeD, California

Happy New Year’s everyone!  Hope you had fun with your family/friends watching the ball drop to ring in the New Year.  2016 has left the building and we’re officially into 2017.  Now’s the time for new beginnings, new adventures, and some new ideas.  But the most important thing about the new year…new blog posts!

Today marks the first post for MakeSandcastlesNotWar (first blog post in 2017, whoot whoot!).  Vacation is over and we’re traveling back to La-La Land for our first topic.  Our first post deals with an interesting prank involving the ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign.

Los Angeles residents noticed something funny about the landmark ‘Hollywood’ sign.  Residents woke up on New Year’s Day to see the sign changed to ‘HOLLYWeeD’.  So that’s how LA residents started their year…Hollywood officialy became HOLLYWeeD!  I now have a burning desire to head over to Hollyweed, California.

This prank is just flat-out hysterical/ironic to see.  California legalized recreational cannabis use on November 8th, so it’s no surprise that the Golden State is turning to pot.  As a matter of fact, this should become a publicity stunt as a means to promote recreational use in the state.  There’s millions of citizens residing in Los Angeles and California continues to rake in millions of tourists every year.

Los Angeles’s ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign was first built in 1923 as a way of advertising housing development in the Hollywood area.  It originally read ‘Hollywoodland’ for 26 years, but Mother Nature knocked out the ‘H’ in a violent storm.  The Hollywood Chamber of Commerece restored the letter and they removed the ‘land’ phrase as well.  Ever since then, the ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign has become a traditional landing point where all the magic happens over at La-La Land.

What’s also interesting to know is that this wasn’t the first instance of someone creating the ‘HOLLYWeeD’ sign.  Back in New Year’s Day of 1976, Cal State Northridge student Daniel Finegood modified the sign by scaling Mount Lee with $50 worth of curtains.  He was modifying it for his project as an art class assignment on working with scale and he earned an A for his work.  Not only did Daniel receive an ‘A’ for his project, but it was also marked the first day that California classified possession of up to one ounce of cannabis as a misdemeanor.  Kudos to Daniel for bringing the magic of ‘HOLLYWeeD’ to the state of California!

Seeing the ‘HOLLYWeeD’ sign was just priceless.  It’s funny to see what pranks spring up on the New Year.  I think California should leave the ‘HOLLYWeeD’ sign up to further promote their cannabis legalization to their residents/tourists.  The prank was crafted well and it’ll definitely cause people to think of another type of magic that Hollywood has in stores for them!

Ever heard of the film Puff the Magic Dragon?  Well the cartoon was created for the CBS network in NYC and it definitely takes on a WHOLE different meaning over at HOLLYWeeD, California!  I could go on and on with the ‘HOLLYWeeD’ cannabis jokes, but it’s safe to say we all get how hilarious this is.  Looks like I’ll have to plan my next vacation over at ‘HOLLYWeeD’ sometime this year.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer/Murder House Criss-Cross

A few weeks ago I was binge-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer after a long day of running errands.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer is all about Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, the ass-kicking vampire slayer of Sunnydale, California.  The casts include Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, and David Boreanaz.

I was in the middle of season 4 where Buffy is now in college with her best friend Willow.  Episode four of the series, titled Fear Itself, was about the Scooby gang entering a frat house for a Halloween party.  While watching the episode, I noticed something unusual about the fraternity house where the haunted house party was taking place.

After a few quick glances of the house, I was shocked to realize that it was THE Murder House that was used for season one of American Horror Story!

You heard me right folks!  That was THE infamous mansion used for Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Murder House.  The first season of American Horror Story revolved around a series of linked murders in a historic mansion with an amazing cast starring Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Tarissa Farmiga, Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare, and Jessica Lange.  Memorable events such as the Rubber Man and Bartholomew came to my mind when seeing Buffy Summers with her friends in that fraternity house.

That fraternity house used in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is known as Alfred Rosenheim’s mansion in Los Angeles.  The mansion was built on 1908 and is currently located in 1120 Westchester Place at Country Club Park.  It was known was “Billionaire Row” back in 1908 because it was known to some of the wealthiest families who resided there.  Rosenheim’s mansion was built with materials such as Italian bricks, African Oak, Teal, Walnut, Maple, and some Peruvian Mahogany that was used for some wood-paneling.  There is an over-sized living room that features a cross-beamed ceiling and tile fireplace.  Guests can eat at the dining room that features an antique Japanese theme with peacock feathers and flowers.  A dramatic circular library was also built with a pink Blood-Marble fireplace and features built-in Tiffany Glass for the leaded glass doors and windows.

Alfred Rosenheim’s mansion has been a historical entertainment hub used for many films, TV shows, music videos, concerts, recording sessions, and other private events.  Some infamous shows that were filmed there include CSI: Miami, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, Californication, Dragnet, Six Feet Under, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy, Angel, and many more series.

A few months ago, the infamous Murder House was listed at Airbnb.  Alfred Rosenheim’s mansion can be booked for 16 people and features 9 bedrooms with 4 ½ baths for everyone.  The mansion is currently listed for $1450/night for anyone who dares to sleep in the murder house from American Horror Story.

This mansion has become a historic landmark in Los Angeles for the entertainment industry.  It is always intriguing to learn about notorious buildings that have been used for various movies and TV series.  Alfred Rosenheim’s mansion is one of many cultural filming landmarks within the Los Angeles area.  There are other famous areas that have been filmed at multiple times including the Santa Monica Pier or Encino High School.  Filming in Los Angeles has always been the norm for employees in the entertainment industry
