Netflix’s Sense8 Shocker!

There’s been lots of amazing original series from Netflix lately.  Stranger Things, Lady Dynamite, and BoJack Horseman are just a few shows that come to mind when I think of Netflix original series.  These shows are chock-full of entertainment and they’re certainly better than what’s on cable television these days.  With these original series being streamed every day, you’d think that Netflix wouldn’t suffer from any cancellations…right?  Wrong!

In a shocking twist of events, Sense8 was cancelled just a few days ago.  Netflix decided to pull the plug after releasing two seasons.  If that weren’t shocking enough, the decision came on the first day of Pride month in June.

First off, I want to start by saying…NOOOO!  Why…WHY?  How could Netflix cancel such a beautiful series like Sense8?  It was getting SO good in season 2 and now I’ll NEVER figure out what happens after the cliff-hanger moments.  They’re all gone…Sun, Kala, Wolfgang, Lito, Nomi, Riley, Capheus, and Will.  All of the clusters vanished from our TV screens!

As you can tell, I was very shocked and frustrated with this decision.  Sense8 was a really unique science fiction/drama series to binge-watch.  Since the news hit the internet, thousands of fans flocked to sign a petition to revive Sense8.  I was one of those participants (I was THAT upset that I had to sign for the sake of the show) and was hopeful that things would turn around soon.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse.  After weeks of debate, Netflix decided that Sense8 would remain cancelled.  The Netflix team thought long and hard about reviving the series and they stuck with their decision.  As far as we know, Sense8 will be on Netflix with only two seasons.

Rather than dragging this news on any further, I’d like to point out that this wasn’t the only show that got the ax this month.  Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down was cancelled after just one season.  The musical drama series was set in the Bronx, focusing on the rise of disco and hip-hop music during the 1970s.  It received lots of raves from viewers, but still suffered the axe this year.

To be honest, I don’t know the exact reason for why Sense8 and The Get Down were cancelled this past week.  What I can say is that both of these series were very expensive to make for each season.  Sense8 was filmed all around the world (Mumbai, Seoul, Amsterdam, Berlin just to name a few!) and was costly to film in these areas.  The Get Down was filmed in New York City, but still filmed with a high budget.

Whatever the case may be, one thing’s for sure: Netflix original series aren’t immune from the dreaded ax.  Every TV series, no matter how amazing it’s doing, could get the ax at any moment (this certainly goes for Netflix series too!).  There’s a lot more original series streaming for Netflix and the competition is intensifying.

I was really shocked when I heard that Sense8 would be cancelled!  It was such an amazing sci-fi/drama series where I was really rooting for the clusters (especially Nomi and Lito!).  Sad to see such a heartwarming series get the boot, especially on the first day of Pride month.  Hopefully Sense8 will get the revival it deserves and we finally figure out what happens after the cliff-hanger ending.  I’m not a fan of cliff-hanger endings, so I really need to see what lies ahead for the clusters.

Until then, we have plenty of season premieres to look forward to this summer.  Just browse around the Netflix library and you’re sure to find another amazing show you’ll fall in love with.
