Weedmaps Billboard Display on Revere Beach

There’s a funny story I have to share with you guys that happened last night.  I was on the blue line train back to Wonderland Station coming home from a long day in Boston.  As the train was pulling up to Wonderland, I noticed a new company being advertised on the Billboard across from Revere Beach.  With my curiosity getting the better of me, I grabbed my messenger bag and headed over to where the billboards were. When I finally arrived to the signs, I discovered a billboard ad that was truly awesome.

Lit up on a clear night was an ad for Weedmaps right on the billboard.  I had to rub my eyes a few times to see if this was just some hallucination, but I realized that this was for REAL.  A cannabis company, Weedmaps, was being advertised on a billboard sign.  Weedmaps…being advertised on a billboard sign…on Ocean Avenue of Revere Beach, which is one of the busiest streets of Revere (especially during the summer!).

Just…WOW.  It’s truly amazing that we’ve gotten so far in the cannabis industry that now it’s being advertised on billboard signs.  This wasn’t being advertised in the city of Boston, but rather within the Greater Boston area.  I’m not sure how long this billboard has been up or how long it plans to stay up for, but I still find it incredible that the cannabis industry is being advertised on these billboards.

For those that aren’t aware of what the company is, Weedmaps is an online cannabis community where users review and discuss various cannabis strains.  Users also review local dispensaries that are open around their area.  Products that are reviewed include flowers, extracts, tinctures, edibles, drinks, and other items to satisfy your cannabis needs.  Weedmaps was founded in July 2008 with headquarters currently in Orange County, California and Denver, Colorado.  Users living in states where recreational/medicinal cannabis is legal can search the site for dispensaries within their area.

Other than being a website, Weedmaps also came out with their own mobile app.  The Weedmaps app is now one of the most widely used/downloaded mobile apps for the Android/Apple system.  Their app features all of the content from the website that you can use through your mobile phone.

This was so amazing to find after my train ride home last night!  To see a billboard advertising the cannabis industry just a few blocks from my apartment on Revere Beach is like looking into a glimpse of the future.  Hopefully the billboard ad will be kept up for a long while in Revere. Revere Beach gets very busy during the summer, which means thousands of consumers will spot the ad while driving down Ocean Avenue.

We’ve come so far in the fight for legal recreational cannabis use that the hard work is finally paying off.  These days, cannabis is rarely advertised outside of the digital world.  Cannabis is STILL considered federally illegal, so spreading awareness of the cannabis industry through outdoor advertising comes with various complications.  Outdoor advertising is about utilizing bus benches, transit boards, and even billboards to advertise your business.  The fact that a billboard advertisement features a cannabis company is a MAJOR step for the industry.

Hopefully we will see more cannabis ads popping up around Boston once cannabis laws become more relaxed.  There are still some major legal hurdles we have to jump through before we can go all Mad Men with this industry (Don Draper is going to have to wait a little longer before coming up with his own ads!).  For now, let’s all look up and take in the beauty of the first cannabis advertisement displayed on the billboard.

Anyone that’s in Revere Beach area that want to check out the ad, it’s currently nested between Ocean Place Tower and Wonderland MBTA Station!

Awesome post Jon. I actually have the WEEDMAPS Ap on my phone. It’s not even legal in Texas yet. HeHe. Looks like our fine country is making strides in the right direction. Who would have ever thought we would see the day when we’d look up and see Marijuana advertised on billboards or anything else for that matter!

Thank you Roxy! Glad you enjoyed the post. Its surprising that cannabis is being spread through outdoor advertising (in Revere of all cities, let alone Boston!). The times are truly changing for the better with the cannabis industry!
